It’s High Heat for the Street 1600 Championship

The Street 1600 NA class is filled with the older Toyota’s that many grew up loving. Most of them being Corolla’s, they all run the classic 4AGE engine which is still popular even to this day, thanks to the great aftermarket support in the Toyota scene. The first six cars in the scoreboard are conquered by them, followed by Mitsubishi’s MIVEC, Swift Sports, Nissan’s SR16’s, and Campro’s to name a few.

Looking up in the list, the heat is predictably high for Round 5 with scores from the second, third and fourth place being so close to each other.

Taking the lead in the championship is Kegani Racing’s Kenny Lee, car #232, who scored first in almost every round of MSF this year. He was defeated in Round 2, where #111 overtook him by 40 points.

#232 scored 1165 for the overall championship points.

#101 follows second place with a rather huge gap between them and #232, scoring 810 in total. However, #101 could have easily spread the gap if they had finished the race for the last round. With that being said, #101 still manages second place despite the DNF. This gives the current third place holder, #111, a chance to steal second place. With 780 points collected, #111 still has two more rounds to work their way up the podium.

It will be a very close fight for both #101 and #111 for the next two rounds and hope is high for #111 as they only have a 30 point disadvantage to beat. An easy feat to pull off- unless #101 spreads the gap with even better set up and driving tactics.

Down to fourth place is RDA Garage’s #129 scoring 720 points overall- which means they are short on 60 points from #111. Also a BZR, #129 would need to up their strategy in order to get a taste of the podium.

As current champion, #232 should not feel comfortable just yet. Anything can happen in two rounds- Kenny Lee would still have to stay alert in order to maintain his current position in the championship. It will be an adrenaline packed race for the other three as they go head-to-head to beat each other’s scores.

The Street 1600 series is a particularly exciting race for many petrolheads as the 1.6 liter racers charge down the track with their distinct engine noise filling up the Sepang air. Experience the action this 15th October as they battle in Round 5 of the series!
